  • Description: Reineckia carnea is a perennial herb native to China and Japan. This species, which reaches 8 in (20 cm) in height with a 15 in (38 cm) spread, produces its almost cup-shaped, dark pink flowers to 1/2 in (12 mm) wide in late spring. If the summer months are warm, round berries will appear in fall (autumn).

    It can be easily confused with Ophipogon, except that Reineckia carnea has shorther and wider leaves. Grown wild in mild climates and is ocassionaly used as a potted plant.

  • Uses: The root is appetizer, cardiotonic and vulnerary. Strengthens the memory.

  • Culture: This fully frost-hardy plant prefers part-shade and moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. Propagate from seed or by separation of the rhizomes. It may be prone to attack by snails and slugs.
