    Dioecious, evergreen shrub or small tree to 15 feet, with sharp, slender, axillary spines; leaves ovate-acuminate, to 3.5 inches long, serrate, shining above, petioles slender, to .25 inches long; berry black, globose, to 3/16 inch in diameter.
