Scandent; internodes less than 1 inch long, to 4 inches in juvenile phase, covered with fibrous remains of scalelike leaves; leaf blades reflexed, broadly ovate, to 2 feet long (much smaller in juvenile phase), deeply cordate, dark green, sometimes splotched with gray, veins red beneath; petioles as long as blades, flat on upper surface, especially toward apex, reddish at apex; peduncle red, with white streaks, spathe 7 inches long, long-subulate apically, cream colored inside, tube green outside, blade suffused with red outside.
