Solanopteris brunei

  • Query IPNI
  • Common Name: Potato Fern
  • Family: Polypodiaceae Bercht. & J. Presl.

  • Country of Origin: western tropical South America
  • Habitat: epiphytic fern

  • Description: Rhizome tubers are complex rhizomatous sacs infested with Azteca and other ants. Ants supposedly mine sugar-laden tissues in the rhizome tubers to hollow them out for occupation, and bring in debris later exploited by roots entering sacs.
  • Culture: Grow in hanging basket in fern mix. Allow rhizomes to run into new basket for propagation. Does not propagate well if rhizomes detached before established in new basket.
