Aechmea brevicollis L.B. Sm.

  • Query IPNI
  • Common Name:
  • Family: Bromeliaceae Juss.

  • Country of Origin: Venezuela
  • Habitat:

  • Description: [Syn. Lamprococcus brevicollis (L.B. Sm.) L.B. Sm. & W.J. Kress]

This species is purported to be a myrmecophytic 'ant-house' with the leaves arranged to channel water away from the center of the plant which is in sharp contrast to other 'tank' bromeliads which collect water in the leaf bases.

  • Culture: These are tank-type bromeliads, and attention should be given to flushing the tanks. Give them moderate to bright light, protect from wind damage and feed monthly with 20-20-20 fertilizer at half strength. They may be either potted or mounted.
