Impatiens repens Moon ex Wight
sect. Uniflorae
- Common Name: Ceylon Balsam
- Family: Balsaminaceae DC.
- Country of Origin: Sri Lanka
- Habitat: steep rock surfaces on thin layers of leaf litter
- Description: This attractive creeping Impatiens species occurs "on steep rock surfaces, both exposed and in semishade, on thin layers of leaf litter and humus" 3. Although described and collected during the mid 1800's the last recorded herbarium specimen was from 1857, prompting some to suggest that the species was extinct in the wild. It was rediscovered in 1995 in three localities during the National Conservation Review of natural forests in Sri Lanka.
Note: Although the species has not been formally assessed by the IUCN, it has been suggested3 that its status be ranked as 'endangered', thus we have flagged it as such in our database although this does not reflect a current IUCN Redlist status at this time.
