Country of Origin: southern Europe, northern Africa and temperate Asia
Habitat: dry riverbeds, often on saline soils
Description: This open, deciduous, elegant shrub grows to about 15 ft (4.5 m) with a spread of about 10 ft (3 m). Fully frost hardy, it carries tiny blue-green leaves on dark red-brown stems. The trunk and branches are also a dark red-brown. Clusters up to 6 in (15 cm) long of profuse, small, pink flowers are borne in upright plumes during late summer and early fall (autumn).
