• Description: This large group of hybrids, which have been known collectively as Pelargonium X hortorum, are derived principally from Pelargonium inquinans which occurs wild in southeastern South Africa, but their parentage includes several other species as well, including P. zonale and P. frutetorum. They are compact plants, usually less than 24 in (60 cm) tall, with succulent green to pale bronze stems and almost circular to kidney-shaped, undulating leaves that have distinctive darker markings or ‘zones’. The flowers, massed on long-stemmed heads, may be single or double, are usually brightly colored and appear over a long season. Although shrubs, zonal pelargoniums may be treated as bedding annuals.
