Poisonous Plants

The plants listed on this page fall into one of the following categories:

  • Plants known to be poisonous or produce toxins (oral, dermal etc...)
  • Plants considered medicinal, for which overdosing could be toxic
  • Plants containing substances considered toxic, but perhaps present in quantities less than that required to be considered 'poisonous' by poison control standards.
  • Plant species of unknown phytochemical composition, but which have closely related species that do contain toxic constituents. These plants should be considered potentially toxic unless otherwise determined to be safe.
  • Plants appearing in the FDA Poisonous Plants Database - note that this is based upon various literature information and is not validated by the FDA. It is merely a starting point.
The plants on this list should not immediately be assumed to be dangerous, but inclusion on this list would suggest further research to determine the level of toxicity posed by the plant and the type of chemicals contained therein.

As of December 3rd, 2001, we are attempting to document our entire collection with regards to potential toxins - plants will appear on this listing as we get the data online. We will include basic information where possible on the toxic constituents of the plants and will provide further references at the bottom of each page.
