- Habitat:
- Description: This handsome, large aquatic plant is suitable for warm to tropical climates or a heated pond in a tropical greenhouse. An interesting perennial, it has flowers with petals that can be red, purple or lilac and are shorter than the 4 sepals, which are green. The flowers appear in summer, followed by prickly berries.
- Uses: Cultivated for its edible seeds (‘fox nuts’) and rhizomes.
- Culture: It requires about 24 in (60 cm) or more depth of water maintained at a temperature of 60°F (15°C) or higher during summer, with heavy feeding in the form of well-rotted manure held beneath sand. In cool climates it is occasionally grown in a large pool in conservatories. Propagate from seed in late spring.
