- Query IPNI
- Common Name: Wallace's Spike Moss
- Family: Selaginellaceae Milde.
- Country of Origin: nw USA
- Habitat: temperate xeric conditions
- Description: This is one of the most versatile of the temperate xeric spikemosses. It is found in northwestern North America from dry rocky exposed slopes to moist, shaded rocky banks or meadows. It forms compact mats with tightly appressed linear scale-like fleshy leaves in dry exposed habitat. It is quite resiilent in drought conditions curling up into what looks like a lifeless tangle that plumps when moisture is available. It can also be used in dry to moist shade where it forms long-creeping mats with less appressed leaves that gradually taper into a bristle. Tucked in crevices in the rock garden this spikemoss resembles a cascading minute conifer. It is a striking groundcover for bonsai or all on its planted in a trough or piece of lava.
