Acacia collinsii Saff.

  • Query IPNI
  • Common Name: Bull Horn Acacia, Cornizuelo
  • Family: Fabaceae Juss.

  • Country of Origin: Mexico to Panama
  • Habitat:

  • Description: The cornizuelos use three species of ant for the protection of their leaves: Ferruginea Pseudomyrmex (red ants, that normally to move with its low tails), Pseudomyrmex nigrocincta (red ants smaller than normally to move with its tails directly back) and Pseudomyrmex belti (with black bodies).

The hollow great thorns are inhabited generally by ants that itch painfully. The ants enter by a small hole in the surface of the thorns and they are fed almost completely on the plant.

This type of ant/plant symbiotic association is known as a myrmecophyte.
