This well-known cactus is composed of clusters of initially erect, finger-sized stems that are pale green with numerous soft, white bristles. Established plants can reach a height of 6 in (15 cm) and width of 12 in (30 cm), with many crowded stems. From an early age it flowers freely indoors if conditions suit it, producing vivid orange-red blooms about 2 in (5 cm) in diameter in spring and summer.
- Culture: This is an easily grown cactus, popular as an indoor and balcony plant and well suited to hanging baskets as well as pots. Grow in well-drained soil in a sunny spot and watch for infestations of mealybug, scale insects and spider mite. Propagate from offsets or seed.
