Grevillea robusta Cunn.

  • Query IPNI
  • Common Name: Silky Oak
  • Family: Proteaceae Juss.

  • Country of Origin: eastern coastal Australia
  • Habitat: sub-tropical rainforests

  • Description: From the sub-tropical rainforests of the Australian east coast, this tree grows to 30m and has long been valued for its beautiful timber, used in furniture making. The fern like leaves with silvery undersides are partly shed just before the branches are almost hidden by the masses of long, golden-yellow blooms which appear in late spring.

Grevilleas bear protandrous flowers, with the stigma carrying mature pollen in position to be collected by pollinators before stigma is ripe.

Grow in a well-drained, slightly dry, neutral to acidic mix in full sun. Tolerant of dry conditions, it does best with a warm dry summer.
